Bicycle Patrol

Department Bicycle Patrol Unit

In July of 1994, the Horseheads Police Department started Chemung County’s first bicycle patrol unit. Horseheads police mountain bike patrol originally began as a pilot program with twoofficers and has since expanded into a thorough departmental division. The bicycle patrol unit now consists of three police equipped mountain bikes and eight certified police bicycle patrol officers. Bicycles have proven to be a tremendous asset; not only as an alternate means of law enforcement patrol, but also as an unprecedented community relations tool.
Current Patrol Bicycles*

  • One GT All Terra Karakoram 16 inch frame with Shimano LX component group.
  • One Trek 7000 19 inch frame with Shimano LX component group.
  • One GT XCR 3000 full suspension bike was purchased in 2000.
  • Two Gary Fisher Sugar 3, full suspension mountain bikes purchased in 2001.

The community has been very receptive to bicycle patrol officers. Interaction between bicycle officers and residents has steadily increased since program implementation, which was our primary objective. Many residents are now requesting additional bicycle patrols in their neighborhoods. Children also welcome bicycle patrols and officers see to it they are aware of and practicing bicycle safety at all times. The officers who patrol neighborhoods and business districts alike have proven to be a great deterrent to crime and a positive role model for the children.
